Joseph Child's diary contains descriptions of the skirmishes and battles leading up to the siege of Vicksburg. It includes his account of the taking of Jackson, Mississippi, the burning of towns, foraging for food and supplies, gunships on the Mississippi River, and the actual siege and surrender of Vicksburg.
